How Chatroulette works now
Chatroulette matching: a selfie, a photo and a mutual yes
Chatroulette was started in Moscow in 2009 by Andrey Ternovskiy, then a 17 year old high school student, who named it after the Russian roulette scenes in The Deer Hunter. The name was a nod to chance.
Its home page now describes a more deliberate route. You are shown photos of potential partners, a good selfie is important to get matches, and the chat starts only if you both agree. Its FAQ also says you are matched instantly once you allow your camera and microphone. Some people like choosing by photo. If you came for the surprise of a random call, the photo round is an extra step before it starts.
Omegle Chat has no photo round. You tap Start, the call opens, and the first impression is the conversation itself. Not a fit? Tap Next and someone new appears.

What Chatroulette's privacy policy says it collects
Chatroulette's privacy policy includes a table of personal information categories collected over the past twelve months. Three rows stand out if you are deciding where to show your face on camera.
To be fair, the home page also says video samples are analyzed by automated moderation systems, and that a possible violation can mean an automatic ban or a review by its team.
Omegle Chat runs automated checks as well, to keep bots and fake profiles out, and that scan is encrypted with nothing kept afterwards. The calls themselves are encrypted from end to end and never recorded. With no account, there is also no profile gathering your history from one call to the next.

Quids and top users on Chatroulette
Its home page describes Quids as a free currency of its own that you earn and spend as you use the site. The people most users want to talk to are listed as top users, and reaching them through the top users filter costs Quids.
Separately, its Terms of Use list the payment methods it accepts, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Apple Pay, say payments are in US dollars and that all sales are final, with no refund. The pages we read do not say what those payments buy.
On Omegle Chat, video chat, matching and the gender filter cost nothing. There are a few advanced filters with a fee. Those are optional, and meeting someone new never depends on them.

Chatroulette and Omegle
Is Chatroulette the same as Omegle?
No, although people often search for the two together. Omegle opened in March 2009 as a chat service that paired strangers without registration and added video in March 2010. Chatroulette launched later in 2009 with video at its center. They were always separate sites, and the original Omegle closed for good on 8 November 2023, while Chatroulette still runs at chatroulette.com.
Omegle Chat is not the original Omegle either. It was made to keep the good side of random video chat: one tap, a stranger on camera, no account. If you want chat roulette in that spirit, without the photo round, that is the gap it fills.
